About This Note

This is an uncirculated example of the 1975 Jordan 1 Dinar note (Pick P-18c), featuring King Hussein in formal portrait on the obverse rendered in green intaglio against a multicolored background of ornate Islamic geometric and floral patterns. The reverse displays a beautifully detailed engraving of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem with its characteristic golden dome and arched arcades, rendered in green with yellow/gold highlighting. The note exhibits the sharp registration, clean margins, and vibrant color saturation typical of uncirculated examples, with no evidence of circulation wear.

Rarity

Common. This 1975 issue remained in production through 1992, resulting in substantial print runs. Market evidence from eBay sales confirms common status: uncirculated examples have sold for $2.55 to $18 USD over recent years, with most ungraded examples trading under $5. Even professionally graded examples (PMG 66-67) typically sell for $35-52, indicating ready availability in the collector market.

Historical Context

Issued by the Central Bank of Jordan in 1975, this note commemorates both the Hashemite dynasty through the portrait of King Hussein II and Jordan's historical and religious significance through the depiction of the Dome of the Rock—one of Islam's holiest sites located in Jerusalem. The bilingual English-Arabic inscriptions reflect Jordan's role as a modern nation-state while the Islamic design elements underscore the country's cultural heritage during a period of relative stability under Hussein's reign.

Design

The obverse features a left-facing profile portrait of King Hussein II wearing formal Western business attire (suit and tie), rendered in green intaglio printing. The central design area is filled with intricate Islamic-inspired floral medallions and geometric patterns in pastel tones of pink, blue, yellow, and orange, creating an ornate cartouche effect. Decorative spiral and shell motifs frame the corners. The reverse depicts an accurate architectural representation of the Dome of the Rock with its prominent golden dome, multiple arched arcades supported by decorative columns, set within a frame of vine and leaf border ornamentation. The numeral '1' appears in the lower left corner with additional floral embellishments in the lower center.

Inscriptions

Front side: 'البنك المركزي الأردني' (Central Bank of Jordan), 'دينار واحد' (One Dinar), 'الحكومة الهاشمية' (Hashemite Government). Back side: 'CENTRAL BANK OF JORDAN', 'ONE DINAR', 'DOME OF THE ROCK-JERUSALEM'. Serial number visible (partial: 249991).

Printing Technique

Intaglio engraving combined with multicolor offset lithography for the background patterns and security elements. The fine line engraving visible in both architectural details and portrait rendering, along with the distinct color separation zones and decorative borders, are characteristic of this period's security printing standards. Based on PMG population data, this note was printed by TDLR (Thomas De La Rue) for variant P-18c.

Varieties

This is identified as Pick P-18c, one of at least seven cataloged variants of this base note. Variants are differentiated by printer marks and watermark configurations (TDLR printer identified). The watermark features King Hussein wearing a turban. Serial number format and specific signature varieties may further distinguish sub-types, though these details would require comparison with reference examples of other Pick 18 variants (P-18e, P-18f, etc.) to confirm the exact variety classification.
