About This Note

This is the scarce first denomination (1 Lilangeni) from Swaziland's inaugural banknote series issued in 1974 by the Monetary Authority of Swaziland. The note displays excellent preservation with crisp colors—predominantly pink/magenta with yellow and green accents—and features King Sobhuza II in formal portrait on the obverse alongside Parliament House in Mbabane. The reverse depicts Swazi princesses in traditional ceremonial dress with distinctive radiating headdresses during the Ncwala kingship ceremony, making this an important cultural artifact of early post-independence Swaziland.

Rarity

Common. The eBay market data demonstrates consistent circulation of this note across multiple decades with regular sales ranging from $1.80 to $6.50 for UNC specimens (with occasional outliers reaching higher prices). The repeated availability in the secondary market and stable pricing pattern indicate a healthy print run without scarcity pressures. This is the first denomination of Swaziland's first series, which typically have wider distribution than higher denominations.

Historical Context

This note was issued in 1974, just two years after Swaziland's independence from British rule in September 1968, marking the establishment of the nation's first independent currency through the Monetary Authority of Swaziland. King Sobhuza II, depicted on the obverse, was the reigning monarch during this crucial period of nation-building and served as a symbol of continuity and legitimacy for the new nation. The reverse's depiction of the Ncwala ceremony—a sacred kingship ritual central to Swazi cultural identity—reinforced the connection between the modern state and traditional authority structures during this transitional period.

Design

The obverse features a formal three-quarter portrait of King Sobhuza II, a bearded man in dignified formal attire, positioned on the left side of the note. The Parliament House in Mbabane is rendered in the lower center-right portion, establishing governmental authority. A prominent circular medallion containing the numeral '1' anchors the center design. The note employs decorative lion figures flanking the borders and extensive geometric tribal-inspired patterns throughout, reinforcing Swazi cultural identity. The reverse depicts approximately ten Swazi princesses wearing elaborate traditional ceremonial dress—characterized by radiating crown-like headdresses, beaded necklaces, and colorful garments—arranged in a horizontal line representing their participation in the sacred Ncwala ceremony. The color palette shifts on the reverse to pink, yellow, and turquoise gradients creating visual interest behind the ceremonial figures.

Inscriptions

Front side: 'MONETARY AUTHORITY OF SWAZILAND' (issuing authority), 'THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR' (legal tender declaration), 'LILANGENI' (currency denomination), 'MINISTER FOR FINANCE' and 'GOVERNOR' (authorized signatories), serial number 'H875406', and denomination '1'. Back side: 'MONETARY AUTHORITY OF SWAZILAND' (repeated issuing authority), 'ONE' (spelled-out denomination), and '1' (numeric denomination).

Printing Technique

This note was produced by Thomas de la Rue (TDLR) of London, one of the world's premier banknote security printers. The visual analysis confirms the use of multi-color offset lithography evidenced by the complex color layering, the geometric microprint patterns visible in the borders and background (providing both aesthetic and security functions), and the fine line work throughout the design. The watermark featuring a shield and spears, typical of de la Rue's security features, is present in the upper right portion of the obverse.

Varieties

This specimen appears to be a standard circulation issue (P-1a) from the 1974 Monetary Authority of Swaziland series. The serial number H875406 and the absence of markings suggest a regular issue variant. The PMG population data indicates multiple varieties exist for Pick-1 including P-1CS1 (specimen), P-1a, P-1a* (replacement note), and P-1s (specimen), though this note shows standard production characteristics. No evidence of specimen overprints or replacement designations (asterisks) is visible in the serial numbering shown in the visual analysis.
