About This Note

A splendid example of Oman's first rial note from 1977, presented in uncirculated condition with crisp, vibrant red and pink tones throughout. The obverse features the distinctive national emblem of crossed khanjars with crown, while the reverse depicts the historically significant Rustaq Fort, a key landmark in Omani heritage. This note represents an early issue from the newly established Central Bank of Oman and is highly sought by collectors of Gulf Arab currency.

Rarity

Common. eBay market data shows consistent sales across all condition grades, with UNC examples regularly achieving $26–$36 in recent years and heavily worn examples selling for $2–$8. The 2019 catalog value of $55 for UNC reflects collector interest but not rarity. The steady, voluminous eBay transaction history spanning over a decade indicates healthy supply in the secondary market at all grades.

Historical Context

Issued in 1977 following Oman's modernization under Sultan Qaboos bin Said, this note marks the Central Bank of Oman's initial currency series. The crossed khanjars and crown emblem reflect Oman's national identity and traditional heraldry, while the depiction of Rustaq Fort—one of Oman's most historically important fortifications—connects the currency to the nation's rich architectural and strategic heritage spanning centuries of regional trade and governance.

Design

The obverse displays an ornate central design dominated by the Omani national emblem—crossed khanjars (traditional curved daggers) surmounted by a crown—positioned prominently at right of center. Elaborate red and pink decorative borders feature intricate floral and geometric patterns with ornamental circular medallions in all four corners, rendered in cream and black. The reverse showcases Rustaq Fort, Oman's major historical fortress, depicted with characteristic crenellated walls, multiple towers, and flanking palm trees set against a light desert landscape with clouds. Serial numbers appear in both corners, with the watermark area visible as a circular design with globe motif.

Inscriptions

Front side: 'السلطنة العمانية' (Sultanate of Oman), 'دولة عمان' (State of Oman), 'بنك عمان المركزي' (Central Bank of Oman). Serial numbers appear as '1294905' and '696304'. Back side: 'CENTRAL BANK OF OMAN' and 'ONE RIAL' in English. The note incorporates both Arabic and English inscriptions reflecting Oman's official bilingual currency presentation.

Printing Technique

Intaglio (engraved) printing on watermarked paper. The fine line work, crisp detail in the architectural rendering of Rustaq Fort, intricate border patterns, and overall depth of impression are characteristic of intaglio production. The note exhibits high-quality security printing typical of Central Bank of Oman issues from this period, likely produced by a major security printer such as De La Rue or similar specialist.

Varieties

This example appears to be Pick-17a (standard issue). PMG records indicate two cataloged varieties exist for this Pick number: P-17a and P-17s (specimen). The serial numbers visible (1294905 and 696304) are consistent with regular circulating issue production. No significant overprints, signature variants, or date variations are evident in the visual analysis. The note represents the standard 1977 first issue of the Central Bank of Oman's 1 rial denomination.
