About This Note

This is an uncirculated 1975 Jordan 5 Dinars (Pick-19d) in pristine condition, featuring King Hussein in formal business attire on the obverse and the iconic Al-Khazneh (Treasury of the Pharaoh) from Petra on the reverse. The note displays the characteristic pink/mauve color scheme with fine line engraving throughout and exhibits no signs of wear, circulation, or damage, making it a premium example for collectors.

Rarity

Common. Despite the UNC catalogue value of $50 (2019), market data from eBay sales shows this note consistently selling in the $23-$78 range depending on grading service and lot competition. Recent UNC sales (ungraded) at $23.50 and PMG-graded examples ranging $50-$78 indicate healthy collector demand but substantial supply. The regular issue status (1975-1992 issue period), TDLR printing by a major security printer, and multiple catalogued varieties (P-19a, P-19cts, P-19d, P-19s1) all suggest this was produced in significant quantities. This note is not rare.

Historical Context

Issued by the Central Bank of Jordan in 1975 during King Hussein II's reign, this note commemorates two significant Jordanian symbols: the reigning monarch and Petra, one of the world's most remarkable archaeological sites and a testament to Jordan's rich historical heritage. The selection of Petra's Al-Khazneh as the reverse design reflects Jordan's pride in its classical antiquities and international cultural significance during this period of national development.

Design

The obverse features a formal portrait of King Hussein II positioned at the left, rendered in three-quarter profile within an ornamental circular frame, wearing a business suit with tie and displaying distinctive facial features. The design incorporates decorative arch patterns and geometric designs across the top border with matching ornamental elements on both vertical edges. The reverse depicts Al-Khazneh (The Treasury), the famous carved classical facade of Petra's main monument, set within a rocky mountainous archaeological landscape showing surrounding ancient structures and terrain. Both sides employ ornamental frames with decorative numerals '5' in shield shapes at the bottom corners, and ornamental scrollwork and leaf designs in the lower left corner.

Inscriptions

OBVERSE: 'البنك المركزي الأردني' (Central Bank of Jordan) at top; 'وزارة المالية' (Ministry of Finance); 'المحافظ' (Governor); signature area with 'حسين خالديين' (Hussein Khalidien); Serial number '٢٨٧٧٢٦٠' (2877260) in Arabic numerals. REVERSE: 'CENTRAL BANK OF JORDAN' (English text at bottom); 'FIVE DINARS' and numeral '5' (English denomination); 'PETRA' (English) and 'بتراء' (Arabic) identifying the archaeological site.

Printing Technique

Intaglio/engraved printing (evidenced by the fine line engraving throughout, complex geometric patterns, and detailed architectural rendering). The note was printed by TDLR (Thomas De La Rue) as indicated in the PMG population report for Pick-19d variant.

Varieties

This note is catalogued as Pick-19d, one of four known variants for the base Pick number 19 (5 Dinars 1975). All variants show TDLR as the printer. The Pick-19d variant may be distinguished by specific signature combinations, overprint characteristics, or serial number ranges, though the visual analysis shows standard signatures and serial number 2877260. Additional variety information would require comparison with other Pick-19 variants (P-19a, P-19cts, P-19s1) to confirm specific distinguishing characteristics.
