About This Note

This is an uncirculated 1968 500 Rupiah note from Bank Indonesia, printed by Pertjetakan Kebajoran, displaying exceptional clarity and crispness with no visible wear or circulation. The note features a striking portrait of General Sudirman on the obverse and a detailed scene of textile workers at a cotton mill on the reverse, both rendered with fine line engraving characteristic of the period. The excellent condition, sharp printing, and vibrant multicolor design make this an appealing example for collectors of Indonesian currency and mid-20th century banknote artistry.

Rarity

Common. This is a regular issue note from 1968 with no evidence of limited print run or special circumstances. eBay sales data shows consistent market activity with numerous examples trading between $7-$130 depending on condition and professional grading, with UNC examples catalogued at $7.50 (2019 values). The regular appearance in secondary markets at modest price points is characteristic of common currency from this period.

Historical Context

Issued in 1968, this note reflects Indonesia's post-independence economic development and nation-building efforts under the Soekarno regime. General Sudirman, depicted in profile on the obverse, was a revered Indonesian military hero and nationalist icon who led resistance against Dutch colonial forces. The reverse design emphasizing yarn spinning and cotton mill operations symbolizes Indonesia's emphasis on industrialization and economic self-sufficiency during this transformative period in the nation's history.

Design

The obverse features a three-quarter profile portrait of General Sudirman facing left, rendered in meticulous line engraving with fine detail work showing traditional Indonesian military attire. To the right of the portrait is the national heraldic shield (Garuda Pancasila) with a central star symbol, flanked by decorative floral and plant motifs. The denomination '500' appears in ornamental oval cartouches in the upper left, lower left, and upper right corners. The reverse depicts a detailed scene of textile production, showing multiple workers engaged in yarn spinning operations at a cotton mill with structured framework and poles visible in the background. A large decorative traditional Indonesian mask design with intricate spiral and geometric patterns in red, green, and pink ornaments the left side of the reverse. The overall palette combines beige/cream backgrounds with dark green, pink, red, and orange accent colors throughout intricate geometric and border patterns.

Intaglio engraving (recess printing), characteristic of high-security currency production of the era.
