About This Note

This is an exceptional uncirculated example of Indonesia's 1968 100 Rupiah note (Pick P-108), featuring General Sudirman's portrait on the obverse and a detailed vignette of Tanjung Priok port on the reverse. The note displays crisp, clean impressions throughout with no signs of circulation, consistent with the assigned UNC grade, and represents a well-preserved specimen of this mid-20th century Indonesian currency issue.

Rarity

Common. Despite the UNC grade specification, eBay market data shows consistent pricing in the $3-23 range across all condition grades since 2009, with UNC specimens typically selling between $4-17. The extensive sales history (over 80 recorded transactions) demonstrates ready availability in the market. This note was a regular issue with substantial print runs, and no evidence suggests limited production, recalls, or scarcity. The denomination and issuer represent mainstream Indonesian currency of the period.

Historical Context

Issued in 1968 during Indonesia's early post-independence monetary period under Bank Indonesia, this note commemorates General Sudirman, a key military figure in the Indonesian independence struggle. The reverse's depiction of Tanjung Priok, Jakarta's major port facility, reflects Indonesia's emphasis on showcasing national infrastructure and economic development during this formative period of the newly independent nation.

Design

The obverse features a right-facing profile portrait of General Sudirman, rendered in fine engraved line work characteristic of professional currency production. The portrait is positioned at left with the Indonesian national coat of arms (featuring a shield with star and heraldic elements) displayed prominently at right. The note is framed by ornate decorative borders incorporating floral scrollwork and geometric patterns. The reverse depicts the industrial port facility of Tanjung Priok in Jakarta, showing multiple ships, dock infrastructure, and loading equipment in a detailed vignette composition. Both sides employ the same elaborate decorative border treatment with scalloped ornamental frames containing the denomination numerals. The color scheme combines deep red/crimson with peachy-beige undertones and blue-green accents in border areas, creating a warm yet dignified appearance typical of 1960s currency design.

Inscriptions

Front: '100' (denomination), 'BANK INDONESIA' (issuing authority), 'SERATUS RUPIAH' (One Hundred Rupiah in Indonesian), '1968' (year of issue), 'DIREKSI' (Direction/Management), 'M SADJIROEN DEL' (artist/engraver signature). Back: '100' (denomination in ornamental frames), 'FQZ097888' (serial number, appears twice), and a lengthy Indonesian legal notice: 'BARANGSIAPA MENEMUKAN UANG INI DIHARAPKAN MENGEMBALIKAN KEPADA BANK INDONESIA ATAU KANTOR CABANG KERTAS BARANGSIAPA YANG MENGGANTI UANG KERTAS YANG HILANG ATAU UANG KERTAS YANG RUSAK SESUAI UNDANG-UNDANG YANG BERLAKU' (Whoever finds this money is requested to return it to Bank Indonesia or its branch office. Whoever replaces lost or damaged banknotes shall do so according to applicable laws).

Printing Technique

Intaglio engraving (line engraving), as evidenced by the fine, precise line work visible throughout both obverse and reverse, the crisp detail in portrait rendering and architectural elements, and the intricate decorative border patterns. The printer is identified in catalog sources as Pertjetakan Kebajoran, an Indonesian printing facility. The security features employ traditional engraved borders, multiple denomination displays, and fine-line background patterns typical of mid-20th century currency production methods.

Varieties

The observed specimen carries serial number FQZ097888, which appears to be a standard production variant with no apparent overprints or modifications. The signature line shows 'M SADJIROEN DEL' as the artist/engraver. PMG records indicate P-108a as a cataloged variant (1 Gulden), though this appears to be a cataloging distinction separate from the current 100 Rupiah note. No specific notable varieties have been identified for this particular Pick number based on available data; the note appears to be from standard production of the regular issue type.
