About This Note

This is an uncirculated example of the UAE's inaugural 10 Dirham note from 1973, issued by the United Arab Emirates Currency Board. The note displays excellent condition with sharp printing, vibrant colors, and no visible wear—the hallmark of an uncirculated specimen. The front features an ornate medallion depicting the symbolic elements of early UAE: a dhow, palm tree, oil derrick, and camel caravan, while the reverse presents an aerial cityscape view of Umm al-Qiwain, making this a historically significant first issue of the modern emirate's currency.

Rarity

Common. While this is the inaugural issue of modern UAE currency and carries historical significance, the 1973 10 Dirham note (Pick P-3) remains common in the numismatic market. eBay market data shows consistent sales of VF and lower-grade examples at $10–$50, with even UNC specimens achieving $200–$450 at auction. The relatively high print run typical of a foundational denomination and the note's continued circulation potential maintain common status despite its age and first-issue pedigree.

Historical Context

This banknote was issued during the foundational year of the United Arab Emirates (1973), just two years after the federation's formation in 1971. The iconography directly reflects the nation's economic and cultural identity of the era: the dhow represents maritime heritage, the oil derrick symbolizes the newly discovered petroleum wealth driving development, and the camel caravan references Bedouin trading traditions. The reverse's aerial view of Umm al-Qiwain documents the rapid urbanization and nation-building that characterized the early post-federation period.

Design

The obverse features an elegant oval medallion framing a layered engraving depicting early UAE economic and cultural symbols: a traditional wooden sailing dhow on water, a palm tree rising from desert ground, an oil derrick (representing the petroleum industry), and a camel caravan with handlers crossing the landscape. The primary denomination text 'عشرة دراهم' (Ten Dirhams) is rendered in large green Arabic script at center. The design is bordered by intricate geometric and floral patterns in corner emblems rendered in complementary colors (pink, yellow, blue-green). The reverse presents a detailed aerial perspectival view of Umm al-Qiwain (one of the seven emirates) within an ornate oval frame, accompanied by English-language text identifying the issuer and denomination. Eagles or falcons are engraved in the lower corners, symbolizing national identity. The base color palette employs tan/beige with accents of cream, yellow, pink, and blue-gray throughout both sides.

Inscriptions

FRONT: Arabic text includes 'إمارات العربية المتحدة' (United Arab Emirates), 'مجلس النقد' (Currency Board), 'عشرة دراهم' (Ten Dirhams), and 'دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة' (State of the United Arab Emirates). Serial number: 124845096 (in Arabic numerals, repeated). BACK: English text reading 'UNITED ARAB EMIRATES,' 'CURRENCY BOARD,' and 'TEN DIRHAMS.' The reverse also lists the emirates: 'UM AL QIWAIN FUJAIRAH RAS AL KHAIMAH' and 'ABU-DHABI DUBAI SHARJAH AJMAN.' Denomination '10' appears in the bottom corners.

Printing Technique

This note was produced using traditional intaglio engraving techniques by De la Rue, London (indicated by the printer mark TDLR). The fine line work visible in the medallion detailing, the complex geometric and floral border patterns, the intricate cityscape rendering with aerial perspective, and the sharp serif typography all confirm the use of steel plate engraving. The multicolor overprinting with distinct color separation and the precision of the design elements are characteristic of De la Rue's high-security banknote production standards from this era.

Varieties

Based on PMG population reports, this Pick number (P-3) exists in multiple catalogued varieties: P-3a (standard issue with TDLR printer mark), P-3a* (starred variety, likely indicating a replacement or special series), and P-3s (specimen note, typically cancelled for collector distribution). The observed example appears consistent with the P-3a standard variety based on the absence of visible cancellation marks or overprints. Serial number 124845096 and the intact condition suggest this is a regular circulating issue rather than a specimen variant.
