About This Note

This is a crisp, uncirculated example of Tonga's 1 Pa'anga note from 3 January 1980, issued by the Currency Commission (Komisiona Pa'anga). The note exhibits exceptional preservation with vibrant green, brown, and blue coloration, featuring King Siaosi Taufa'ahau IV Tupou's formal portrait on the obverse and a detailed tropical coastal landscape on the reverse. This Pick-19c variant represents the middle period of the 1976-1989 Currency Commission issue series.

Rarity

Common. The Currency Commission 1 Pa'anga note (P-19 series, 1976-1989) was issued in significant quantities over a thirteen-year period. eBay market data shows uncirculated examples consistently selling in the $3-$18 range since 2013, with recent 2025-2026 sales at $14-$22 for graded examples. The 2019 catalogue value of $7.50 for UNC condition and the large volume of sales across multiple condition grades indicate this is a standard circulation-era issue with no print run restrictions or rarity factors.

Historical Context

Issued during the reign of King Taufa'ahau IV in 1980, this note reflects Tonga's modern monetary period following the establishment of the Currency Commission in 1973. The reverse depicts a colonial-era tropical settlement with volcanic peaks and palm trees, representing Tonga's identity as an island kingdom, while the obverse features the reigning monarch as a symbol of national sovereignty and continuity. This particular issue date of 3 January 1980 falls within the broader Currency Commission series that maintained circulation until 1989.

Design

The obverse features a right-facing portrait of King Siaosi (George) Taufa'ahau IV Tupou rendered in formal military dress with ceremonial collar detailing, positioned on the right side of the note. At the lower left is the official coat of arms of Tonga—a shield bearing a cross and three stars surrounded by ornamental scrollwork. A prominent circular concentric ring ornamental design occupies the center of the obverse, serving as a security element and aesthetic focal point. The reverse depicts a picturesque tropical coastal landscape with colonial-style buildings scattered throughout a settlement, palm trees and tropical vegetation in the foreground, and what appears to be a volcanic peak or mountain range in the background overlooking a harbor or water body. Both sides feature elaborate decorative border frames with geometric patterns and fine line work characteristic of high-quality banknote engraving.

Inscriptions

FRONT: 'Pule'anga 'o Tonga' (Kingdom of Tonga), 'Komisiona Pa'anga' (Currency Commission), 'Pa'anga'e Taha' (One Pa'anga), 'T$1' (1 Tongan Pa'anga), 'PA'ANGA' (Pa'anga), '3rd January, 1980' (Issue Date), 'B343839' (Serial Number). BACK: 'T$1' (1 Tongan Pa'anga), 'PAANGA' (Pa'anga), 'GOVERNMENT OF TONGA' (Government of Tonga), 'THESE NOTES ARE LEGAL TENDER FOR THE PAYMENT OF ANY AMOUNT' (Legal tender declaration).

Printing Technique

Intaglio (engraved) printing by Thomas De La Rue, London, the renowned security printer. The fine line patterns, cross-hatching, intricate ornamental details, detailed landscape engraving, and fine dot patterns visible throughout both sides are characteristic of intaglio production. The depth of detail and precision in the portrait, coat of arms, and landscape scene reflect the superior quality of intaglio printing methodology.

Varieties

This note is catalogued as Pick-19c, representing a specific date and issuer variant within the Currency Commission series. The visual analysis confirms the 3 January 1980 issue date. The P-19 series encompasses five known PMG-catalogued variants (P-19b, P-19b*, P-19c, P-19c*, and P-19s), with variations likely attributable to different printing dates, signature combinations, and serial number prefixes. No replacement note characteristics (Z/1 prefix) are evident in the serial number B343839 observed here, confirming this as a regular issue note.
