About This Note

This is a Fine condition 50 Rupees banknote from the Central Bank of Ceylon, dated 12th May 1954, featuring a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in profile on the obverse. The note displays excellent intaglio printing craftsmanship with intricate ornamental borders and decorative cartouches in multicolored tones of blue, pink, green, and red. Despite visible signs of age including creasing, foxing, and surface wear consistent with seven decades of circulation, the note retains clear legibility and the fine security printing remains well-preserved.

Rarity

Common. The Central Bank of Ceylon's 1954 50 Rupees note (Pick 52) was issued in substantial quantities and remains readily available on the numismatic market. No evidence of limited print runs, recalls, or scarcity exists for this denomination and year. Notes in Fine condition circulate regularly among collectors and are not considered scarce or valuable above face value equivalents.

Historical Context

Issued in 1954 during the early years of Ceylon's independence from British rule, this banknote represents the transitional period when the newly sovereign nation maintained the British monarch as ceremonial head of state, as reflected in the Elizabeth II portrait. The reverse depicts the Moon Stone (Chandra Kal Maliga) located in front of the Vatadage at Polonnaruwa, one of Ceylon's most significant Buddhist architectural sites, symbolizing the nation's cultural and religious heritage. This note predates Ceylon's republican constitution by over a decade, making it a historically significant example of post-colonial monetary policy.

Design

The obverse features a left-facing profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a tiara, positioned on the left side of the note within an ornate intaglio-printed frame. The center of the obverse contains a large decorative oval cartouche with intricate geometric and botanical patterns in pink, green, and blue inks, with the denomination 'Fifty Rupees' prominently displayed across this central element. The reverse depicts the Moon Stone (Chandra Kal Maliga) as a large circular ornamental medallion in the center-left, with architectural terraced steps or staircases above it representing the Vatadage structure at Polonnaruwa—one of Ceylon's most important Buddhist monuments. Both sides feature ornate decorative borders with fine floral and geometric patterns in blue and neutral earth tones. The multicolored security printing on the obverse contrasts with the blue and beige tones on the reverse.

Printing Technique

Intaglio (engraved line printing) executed by Bradbury Wilkinson, New Malden, a world-renowned security printer. The visual analysis confirms the characteristic features of high-quality intaglio printing including fine line work, intricate decorative patterns, complex ornamental designs, and security features resistant to counterfeiting. The printer's identification on the reverse ('Security Print Wilkinson & Co Cipher Walton Surrey England') reflects the note's production by a specialized security printing facility.

Varieties

This specific example is dated 12th May 1954 with serial number R 22 23191 and reference marking B 3191. The visual analysis indicates this is from the 1954 date variety (distinct from the 1952 variant also cataloged under Pick 52). The note features the Governor and Minister of Finance signature block visible on the obverse. No overprints or unusual markings are evident that would indicate a special variety or error note.
