About This Note

This is a pristine uncirculated specimen of the Rwandan 20 Francs from the 1969 issue (1 September 1969), graded Pick P-6a. The note displays exceptional clarity with sharp engraving throughout, featuring the national flag on the obverse and a compelling rural development scene with four young men and industrial infrastructure on the reverse. The bilingual inscriptions (French and Kinyarwanda) and ornate geometric security patterns reflect Rwanda's post-independence identity during the early years of the Banque Nationale du Rwanda.

Rarity

Common. The 1964-1976 series was a substantial regular issue of the Banque Nationale du Rwanda with multiple date varieties and signature combinations. eBay market data shows UNC specimens trading in the $11-$34 range (2015-2016 sales), with catalog values at $30 UNC, indicating healthy availability. No evidence of limited print runs, recalls, or numismatic scarcity exists for this Pick number. Standard survival rates for well-preserved 1960s African banknotes support a common classification.

Historical Context

Issued during Rwanda's early independence period (1964-1976), this banknote series represents the newly sovereign nation's economic development agenda. The reverse imagery—depicting young agricultural workers with visible industrial/hydroelectric infrastructure in the background—symbolizes Rwanda's modernization efforts and the harnessing of hydroelectric power for national development in the post-colonial era. The bilingual text reflects Rwanda's cultural identity, balancing French colonial administrative language with Kinyarwanda.

Design

The obverse features the red, yellow, and green flag of Rwanda at left, symbolizing the nation's independence and identity, accompanied by an ornate white and green decorative rosette pattern at center-right, all within an intricate geometric border. The reverse depicts four young men in light shirts representing the Rwandan workforce, set against a detailed landscape of cultivated agricultural fields with forested hills beyond, and crucially, visible industrial structures and what appears to be hydroelectric power infrastructure in the middle distance—symbolizing Rwanda's development aspirations. A large circular medallion containing the denomination '20' in an ornate geometric pattern anchors the right side of the reverse. The overall design employs muted earth tones (browns, tans, sepia) on cream background, conveying both tradition and modernization.

Inscriptions

FRONT: 'Banque Nationale du Rwanda' (National Bank of Rwanda), 'VINGT FRANCS' (Twenty Francs), 'PAR AILLEURS À VUE' (Payable on sight), 'LA LOI PUNIT LE CONTREFACTEUR' (The law punishes the counterfeiter), signature titles 'VICE-GOUVERNEUR' (Vice-Governor) and 'GOUVERNEUR' (Governor), date '1-09-69' (1 September 1969), serial number 'AC141059'. BACK: 'Banki Nasiyonal y'u Rwanda' (National Bank of Rwanda in Kinyarwanda), 'AMAFRANGA 20' (Twenty Francs in Kinyarwanda), 'ITEGEKO LIHANA UMUNTU WESE UZIGANA IYI NOTI' (The law punishes anyone who counterfeits this note in Kinyarwanda).

Printing Technique

Intaglio engraving (line engraving), evidenced by the fine detail, sharp line work, and three-dimensional quality visible in the portraits, landscape elements, and decorative patterns. The microprint geometric borders and the crisp, precise rendering of the flag and rosette pattern are characteristic of high-security intaglio production. The note exhibits the hallmarks of European security printing standards typical of Banque Nationale du Rwanda's contracted printers during this period.

Varieties

This specimen represents the 1.9.1969 (1 September 1969) date variety with signature titles 'VICE-GOUVERNEUR' and 'GOUVERNEUR'. The serial number prefix 'AC' indicates this is a standard issue note (not a replacement note, which would carry prefix 'ZZ'). Within the P-6a Pick number, varieties exist based on issue date (1964, 31.3.1966, 15.3.1969, 1.9.1969), signature title variations, and security thread presence, making this the late-1969 variant of the series.
