About This Note

This is a VF-graded 10 gulden banknote from 1941, issued by Nederlandsche Bank during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The note features an elegant portrait of a young woman on the obverse with ornate radiating medallion design, while the reverse displays an elaborate Dutch coat of arms with crown. The note shows appropriate wear for its age and condition grade, with visible creasing and age-related discoloration consistent with 1940s-era circulation and storage.

Rarity

Common. The 10 gulden denomination from 1941 was produced in standard quantities during the occupation period for regular circulation needs. No evidence of limited print runs, recalls, or short-lived issuing authority status exists for this Pick number. The VF condition grade is typical for surviving examples from this era. This series remains readily available in the collector market.

Historical Context

This 1941 10 gulden note was issued during World War II, a period of significant upheaval for the Dutch banking system under German occupation. The continued use of the Dutch coat of arms and traditional Nederlandsche Bank iconography reflects the maintenance of nominal Dutch monetary sovereignty during occupation. The note's design and inscriptions preserve pre-war aesthetic traditions while serving the financial system of occupied Netherlands.

Design

The obverse features a right-facing portrait of a stylized young woman with fashionably curled hair in the Art Deco style characteristic of 1930s-1940s design. The portrait is positioned on the right side of the note. The left side showcases elaborate ornamental patterns in red and blue with fan-like radiating designs and lace-like geometric elements. A large central medallion with radiating sunburst pattern contains the bank name and denomination. The reverse displays the Dutch coat of arms—a shield quartered with heraldic elements representing the provinces of the Netherlands, topped with a crown. The entire background of both sides features fine parallel line patterns and intricate geometric engraving typical of security printing. Corner numerals '10' are positioned at top-left and bottom-right on the reverse.

Inscriptions

FRONT SIDE: 'DE NEDERLANDSCHE BANK' (The Dutch Bank) / 'BETAALT AAN TOONDER' (Pays to bearer) / 'TIEN GULDEN' (Ten gulden) / 'DE PRESIDENT' (The President) / '10' (denomination) / Signature: Dukkeroth. BACK SIDE: 'DE NEDERLANDSCHE BANK' (The Dutch Bank) / '10' (denomination) / Serial number: '2 BR 023141' / 'JOH ENSCHEDE EN ZONEN IMP' (Joh Enschede and Sons, printer) / 'CA LION CACHET DEL' (engraver attribution) / 'WETBOEK VAN STRAFRECHT ART 153' (Criminal Code Article 153) / Legal warning text regarding counterfeiting penalties under Criminal Code Articles 153 and 238, warning of imprisonment terms of 9-20 years for counterfeiting currency.

Printing Technique

This note was produced using intaglio engraving and letterpress printing techniques, standard for high-security banknote production of the period. The printer was Joh Enschede en Zonen (Joh Enschede and Sons), the renowned Dutch security printer based in Haarlem, as indicated on the reverse. The extensive fine-line parallel patterns, intricate radiating designs, and detailed portraiture were created through steel plate engraving. The security features include complex geometric patterns and fine line-work throughout designed to prevent counterfeiting.

Varieties

Pick 56b is the 1941 issue of the 10 gulden note. This specific example shows signature by Dukkeroth and serial number '2 BR 023141', with the '2 BR' prefix indicating one of the standard issue batches. The date notation '17.03.42' in the collector notes likely indicates the date of note acquisition or cataloging rather than the note's issue date. No overprints or significant variations are evident on this specimen.
