About This Note

An exceptional UNC example of the French Indochina 1 piastre from Banque de l'Indochine, featuring striking multicolored design with a Vietnamese woman in traditional áo dài on the obverse and a laborer with carrying pole on the reverse. The note displays the fine engraved detail characteristic of Sébastien Laurent's work, with vibrant cream, blue, pink, orange and gold toning that demonstrates excellent preservation despite visible patina consistent with age. This particular specimen represents the 1949 issue with Lao Type II text, a significant variant in the 1 piastre series.

Rarity

Common. The eBay price tracking data shows consistent sales across numerous condition grades from VF ($0.99-$4.25) through AUNC ($5.50-$13.25) to UNC ($5.99-$10.50), with typical UNC examples selling in the $5-$12 range historically. While PMG-graded high-end examples (PMG 67-68) have commanded higher prices ($100-$511), the note itself was produced in substantial quantities as regular currency of French Indochina. The 2016 catalog value of $5 for UNC reinforces common status. This denomination and issue represent routine circulating currency with no documented scarcity or recall history.

Historical Context

Issued during the twilight years of French Indochina's monetary system, this 1 piastre reflects the colonial administration's emphasis on depicting indigenous populations and architecture. The obverse showcases traditional Vietnamese architectural heritage with pagoda-style structures, while the reverse features a Vietnamese merchant or laborer—symbolic imagery designed to legitimize French colonial currency through representations of local life and labor. The bilingual French and Vietnamese/Khmer inscriptions, along with the presence of Chinese characters on the reverse, underscore the complex multilingual and multicultural nature of French Indochina during the late colonial period.

Design

The obverse features a portrait of a Vietnamese woman in profile facing left, wearing traditional pink/mauve áo dài (traditional Vietnamese dress) with characteristic hairstyle and earring, positioned at the right side of the note. The center depicts a significant colonial-era pagoda-style building with multiple tiered roofs in yellow and gold, red brick walls and foundation—likely representing an important administrative or religious structure from French Indochina. An ornamental geometric border with stepped patterns in orange frames the entire design, with classical corner motifs in cream and beige. The reverse showcases a shirtless Vietnamese man wearing the iconic conical straw hat (nón lá), depicted in a traditional merchant or laborer pose carrying baskets suspended from a yoke across his shoulders—a classic iconographic representation of Southeast Asian commerce and manual labor. The background reveals rural agricultural terrain. A blue Greek key geometric border pattern frames both sides, with decorative ornamental frames throughout. The color palette of cream/beige background with blue, pink, orange, yellow and green accents creates a balanced and visually distinctive design.

Printing Technique

Intaglio engraving (line engraving), as evidenced by the intricate fine line work throughout the border patterns, portraiture, and landscape details. The note was engraved by Sébastien Laurent and printed by Hourriez (or Hourriez & Co.), a prominent French security printer of the period. The fine detail reproduction, gradient modeling in the portraits, and precise geometric border patterns are characteristic of high-quality intaglio production. Multiple signatures and security lines present indicate professional bank note printing standards of the 1930s-1940s era.

Varieties

This specimen is identified as Pick P-54e, representing the 1949 issue with Lao Type II (New Lao) text on the reverse. According to the reference catalog, this variant is distinguishable by the absence of a dot under the 'O' in 'MOT' on the reverse (a characteristic differentiating it from earlier Lao Type I versions). The note carries engraver credit 'SÉB. LAURENT FEC.' and printer credit 'HOURRIEZ SG.', standard for this issue. Serial number 23564116363 represents a mid-range serial from the production run. No notable overprints or signature varieties are evident in this specimen.
