About This Note

A pristine example of Sweden's 1963 10 kronor banknote (Pick P-52a) in uncirculated condition, featuring King Gustav VI Adolf in profile on the obverse and a striking stylized eagle with snowflake motifs on the reverse. The note exhibits crisp printing with no visible wear, tears, or creases, displaying excellent color saturation in the green, blue, and red tones characteristic of this classic Swedish issue.

Rarity

Common. This note was issued in regular circulation from 1963 through 1990 (a 27-year span), ensuring substantial print runs. Secondary market data confirms common status: catalog values list UNC specimens at $6 (2019), and eBay sales history shows UNC examples selling for $2.25-$7.02 across multiple transactions, well below the $20 threshold for scarce notes. The denomination and extended circulation period indicate no significant rarity.

Historical Context

Issued by Sveriges Riksbank during the reign of King Gustav VI Adolf (1950-1973), this banknote represents Sweden's post-war monetary design era. The northern lights and snowflake imagery on the reverse reflect Swedish national identity and the country's Arctic geography, while the portrait of the reigning monarch underscores the constitutional monarchy's role in Swedish governance during the Cold War period.

Design

The obverse features a right-facing profile portrait of King Gustav VI Adolf wearing glasses, positioned at the right side of the note. The center displays the Swedish coat of arms with the three-crown shield (Tre Kronor) beneath a royal crown in red and blue, symbolizing Swedish sovereignty. An ornate oval medallion on the left contains the denomination '10' within an elaborate rosette pattern. The reverse depicts a majestic stylized eagle with outstretched wings as the dominant motif, rendered in green and purple-blue with intricate feather detailing. Hexagonal snowflake designs appear in frames at top corners and within the eagle's body, representing Sweden's northern climate and natural phenomena. Both sides feature fine engraved background patterns of wavy lines providing visual depth and security.

Inscriptions

Front side: 'SVERIGES RIKSBANK' (Swedish National Bank), 'TIO KRONOR' (Ten Kronor), denomination '10' (corners), '1963 K' (issue year and printer's letter), serial number 'H598116'. Back side: Denomination '10' (top left and bottom right corners). All text in Swedish except numeric denominations.

Printing Technique

Intaglio (engraved) printing on banknote paper, utilizing multiple color plates to achieve the complex multi-color design. The detailed line work, fine rosette patterns, feather textures, and geometric snowflake designs are characteristic of traditional banknote engraving. The watermark featuring August Strindberg (repeated) was incorporated during the papermaking process. The year and printer's letter were added via dark red letterpress overprint.

Varieties

This example is cataloged as Pick P-52a, with the watermark of August Strindberg (repeated). PMG records indicate two variants exist for this base Pick number: P-52e (with A. Strindberg watermark) and P-52s (unstated variant). The observed serial number prefix 'H' and issue marking '1963 K' are consistent with the standard 1963 issue. No overprints, color variations, or signature variants are apparent on this example that would constitute a distinct sub-variety.
