This is an exceptional example of the 1976 Republic of Seychelles 10 Rupees banknote (Pick P-19) in uncirculated condition. The note features vibrant, well-preserved colors and crisp printing on both sides, with a portrait of a dignitary on the front and a detailed tropical landscape scene on the back. As a signed example from the early post-independence era of Seychelles, this note represents an important piece of the nation's numismatic history.
Common. The 1976 10 Rupees note remains relatively common in the numismatic market, even in uncirculated condition. While early post-independence Seychellois banknotes have collector interest, the 10 Rupees denomination was produced in substantial quantities. Uncirculated examples command modest premiums over circulated notes, but the note itself is not scarce.
Issued in 1976, this note commemorates Seychelles' independence from British rule (June 29, 1976). The reverse design depicts traditional Seychellois life, including a thatched-roof structure and traditional pirogue sailing vessel, reflecting the island nation's cultural heritage and maritime identity. The granite rock formations shown are characteristic of Seychelles' distinctive natural landscape.
The obverse features a portrait of Sir James Richard Marie Mancham, first President of the Republic of Seychelles, depicted as a bearded gentleman in formal business attire with a dark tie on the right side. The left side incorporates marine iconography including a seashell and an ornate numeraled cartouche containing '10', with white orchid flowers as central floral elements, rendered in blue, green, and peachy-salmon tones. The reverse presents a picturesque tropical scene featuring a traditional Seychellois meeting house with characteristic thatched roof, flanked by the distinctive large granite boulders (possibly referencing Anse Source d'Argent or similar locations), with coconut palms in the background, mountains in the distance, and a traditional pirogue in the foreground waters. The design is framed by ornate guilloche patterns in blue and pink with corner numerals.
Front: 'REPUBLIC OF SEYCHELLES' (sovereign nation designation), 'TEN RUPEES' (denomination in words), 'MINISTER FOR FINANCE' (title of signatory), Serial number 'A357004' / 'A/1 357004', and '10' (denomination numeral). Back: 'Republic of Seychelles' (sovereign identification), 'Ten Rupees' (denomination in words), and '10' (denomination numerals in all four corners).
Intaglio (engraved) printing with fine line work and guilloche pattern security features. The intricate engraved details, fine portraiture, and decorative patterns are consistent with De La Rue's printing standards, the primary security printer for Seychelles banknotes during this period. The sharp, crisp impression and excellent color registration observed in the uncirculated example indicate professional security printer production.
Serial number prefix 'A' indicates the first printing series. This example features a handwritten ministerial signature, consistent with early 1976 issues. The specific signature and serial number combination (A357004 / A/1 357004) may be cataloged by advanced collectors, but no major recognized varieties have been documented for this Pick number at standard references.
