About This Note

This is a high-grade example of Rwanda's 1966 50 Francs note (Pick P-7a), presented in uncirculated condition with crisp paper and no visible wear. The note features a bilingual design reflecting post-independence Rwanda, with a detailed map of the country on the obverse and agricultural workers on the reverse, both rendered in fine engraving. The serial number C022799 and signature titles (Vice-Governor and Governor) are clearly visible, making this an excellent specimen for collectors of African currency or early Central African Banking notes.

Rarity

Common. This note from the 1964-1976 regular issue has a lengthy circulation period and substantial print run typical of a standard denomination from a national central bank. eBay market data confirms common status: recent sales range from $23–$55 depending on grade, with UNC examples selling in the $20–$55 range as of 2019. The absence of a ZZ replacement prefix on the serial number C022799 further indicates this is a regular issue note, not a scarcer replacement note. This Pick P-7a variety remains readily available to collectors.

Historical Context

Issued by the Banque Nationale du Rwanda just five years after Rwanda's independence in 1962, this 1966 note reflects the newly sovereign nation's identity through bilingual French-Kinyarwanda inscriptions and imagery celebrating Rwanda's economic foundation. The reverses' depiction of agricultural laborers harvesting crops illustrates the nation's agrarian economy during the early post-colonial period, while the map on the obverse affirms territorial sovereignty and provincial organization during a formative period in Rwandan history.

Design

The obverse features an intricate map of Rwanda at left-center, clearly delineating the ten provincial boundaries and major cities including Ruhengeri, Byumba, Gisenyi, Kibuye, Gisarama, Kigali, Kibungo, Gikongoro, Cyangugu, and Butare. A striking ornate floral rosette medallion in decorative guilloche work occupies the right side, serving as a security element and aesthetic focal point. The denomination '50' appears in opposite corners. The reverse depicts an unidentified Rwandan worker in profile wearing a wide-brimmed hat and striped shirt at left, with a harvesting scene (likely tea or coffee picking, major Rwandan agricultural products) at center-right, and a large '50' enclosed in an elaborate circular decorative frame. Both sides employ fine-line engraving with geometric borders and cross-hatching throughout.

Inscriptions

FRONT: 'Banque Nationale du Rwanda' (National Bank of Rwanda), 'CINQUANTE FRANCS' (Fifty Francs), '50' (denomination), 'C022799' (serial number, appears twice), '31·01·66' (date: 31 January 1966), 'LA LOI PUNIT LE CONTREFACTEUR' (The law punishes counterfeiters), 'VICE-GOUVERNEUR' (Vice-Governor signature title), 'GOUVERNEUR' (Governor signature title). BACK: 'Banki Nasyonali yu Rwanda' (National Bank of Rwanda in Kinyarwanda), 'AMAFRANGA 50' (50 Francs in Kinyarwanda), '50' (denomination in ornate frame), 'ITEGEKO LIHANA UMUNTU WESE UZIGANA IYI NOTI' (The law punishes anyone who counterfeits this note, in Kinyarwanda).

Printing Technique

This note was produced using intaglio (line engraving) printing on both obverse and reverse, evidenced by the fine detail work, intricate guilloche patterns, complex cross-hatching in background areas, and the precise geometric borders visible in the visual analysis. The security features—particularly the ornate rosette medallion and circular frame—employ advanced engraving techniques typical of Banque Nationale du Rwanda's contracted security printers for this period. The teal-green and blue-gray color palette on the obverse and the dark blue-navy on the reverse were achieved through multi-pass intaglio printing.

Varieties

This specimen exhibits the signature variety with both 'VICE-GOUVERNEUR' and 'GOUVERNEUR' signature lines present, consistent with standard P-7a issues. The note is dated 31·01·1966 (31 January 1966), placing it within the documented date range (1964-1976) for this Pick number. The catalog data indicates date and signature title varieties exist throughout the series. The serial number prefix 'C' indicates a regular issue (not a replacement note with ZZ prefix). No security thread is visible in the visual analysis, consistent with earlier variant descriptions, though some sources note security thread variants exist within this issue.
