About This Note

A handsome VF example of the Russian Empire's 3 Rubles note from 1905, featuring the characteristic ornate Art Nouveau design with pink, green, and tan multi-color printing. The note displays the iconic double-headed eagle emblem, intricate scrollwork borders, and complex circular medallion patterns on the reverse that exemplify the sophisticated security printing of the Imperial State Bank. Despite light age-related yellowing and foxing consistent with circulation, the note retains excellent clarity of design and legibility, with the signature of Manager Ovtsinnikov visible on the front.

Rarity

Common. The 3 Rubles denomination from the 1905 Imperial series represents a standard circulation note issued in substantial quantities by the Russian State Bank. While individual notes survive in varying conditions, the Pick P-9c(7) variety is not scarce in the collector market. The VF grade of this example is desirable but not exceptionally rare, as many specimens of this popular denomination have survived in similar or better condition.

Historical Context

This State Credit Note was issued during the final decade of Tsarist Russia, shortly after the Russo-Japanese War and preceding the 1917 Revolution. The note's inscriptions explicitly reference the gold standard backing (1 Ruble = 1/15 Imperial, containing 17.424 shares of pure gold) and state that these credits were legal tender throughout the Russian Empire on par with gold coins. The double-headed eagle and elaborate Imperial iconography emphasize the authority and legitimacy of the State Bank of the Russian Empire during this period of economic and political transition.

Design

The front of this note features the Imperial coat of arms—the double-headed eagle—prominently displayed at the top center, flanked by ornate Art Nouveau scrollwork and floral elements rendered in the characteristic pink, green, and tan color palette. The denomination and issuing authority text are housed within a decorative cartouche at the center. Two signature lines appear at the bottom for the Manager (Управляющий) and Cashier (Кассир), with serial numbers positioned in the top left and bottom right corners. The reverse displays a more elaborate ornamental design dominated by two large, identical circular medallions featuring intricate spiral and scroll patterns with fine engraved line work, separated by a central red/burgundy cartouche containing the legal conditions of the note. The double-headed eagle appears again at the top center of the reverse. Throughout both sides, the design exemplifies the security printing standards of the Imperial State Bank, with multiple colored inks creating depth and preventing easy counterfeiting.

Printing Technique

Multi-color intaglio (engraved steel plate) printing, employing layered color application with pink, green, blue, tan, and red inks. The intricate circular medallions, fine line work in scrollwork and borders, and detailed background patterns are characteristic of high-security banknote engraving by a specialized Imperial security printer. The precision of the fine line work and complex color layering indicate professional Imperial printing facilities, likely the State Printing Office (Экспедиция Заготовления Государственных Бумаг) or an official contractor for the Imperial State Bank.

Varieties

This note is cataloged as Pick P-9c(7), indicating it is the seventh known variety of the 3 Rubles 1905 issue. The signature of Ovtsinnikov (noted in the collector notes) as Manager is documented for this period. Varieties of Imperial Russian notes of this era are often distinguished by different signature combinations (Manager and Cashier signatures varied by date and tenure), and the serial number prefix may also indicate production batches or printing facilities. The 'б.л' (без ограничения, 'without limitation') marking appears on this note, which is standard for the gold-backed credit notes of this issue.
