About This Note

A stunning example of the 1905 Russian State Credit Note for 3 Rubles (Pick-9c(10)), presented in VF condition with vibrant original colors and minimal wear. This ornate Art Nouveau design showcases the Imperial Russian banking system at its height, featuring elaborate decorative borders in pink, green, and tan with dual Imperial eagles and fine engraving throughout. The note's excellent preservation and the presence of signature Chikhirzin make this an attractive piece for collectors of early 20th-century Russian currency.

Rarity

Common. The 1905 issue of Russian State Credit Notes, while from the Imperial era, was produced in substantial quantities to meet circulation demands of the Russian Empire's growing economy. The 3 Ruble denomination was frequently circulated and was not subject to the recalls or restrictions that affected some other denominations. Pick-9c(10) represents a standard variety from a long-lived series that remained in circulation for over a decade. VF condition examples, while desirable, are not exceptionally scarce in the collector market. Most 1905 3 Ruble notes are readily available to collectors at moderate prices.

Historical Context

This 3 Ruble note represents the height of the Russian Imperial monetary system, issued after the 1897 monetary reform that established the gold standard. The prominent inscription regarding gold redemption ('The State Bank exchanges credit notes for gold coins without limit of amount') reflects the confidence and stability of Imperial finances in the early 1900s, while the dual Imperial eagles and coat of arms on both sides symbolize the authority of the Romanov dynasty. The Art Nouveau styling of the ornamental borders and architectural elements reflects the aesthetic preferences of the Edwardian era in Imperial Russia.

Design

The 1905 3 Ruble note exemplifies Imperial Russian banknote design at the turn of the century. The front features a symmetrical Art Nouveau composition with cream and pale yellow background dominated by pink, green, and tan ornamental borders containing elaborate scrollwork and architectural flourishes. The Russian Imperial double-headed eagle with crown appears twice in the upper corners of the decorative border, flanking a central white panel with denomination and explanatory text. A decorative architectural element resembling a fortified tower or fortress structure crowns the top center. The reverse side continues the Imperial aesthetic with the full Russian Imperial coat of arms (double-headed eagle with crown and accompanying shields) positioned at top center. Large stylized denomination numerals '3' appear on both left and right sides, integrated into circular spiral motifs with fine line work. The back employs pale green, light tan, blue, and red/pink accent colors with black line engraving throughout. Both sides demonstrate the finest engraving techniques of the Imperial State Printing Works.

Inscriptions

FRONT SIDE: Serial Number (Ц.b 246137) appears in upper left and lower right corners. Central inscription reads 'Государственный кредитный билет' (State Credit Banknote) with denomination 'ТРИ РУБЛЯ' (THREE RUBLES). Primary text states: 'ГОСУДАРСТВЕННЫЙ БАНК РАЗМЕНИВАЕТ КРЕДИТНЫЕ БИЛЕТЫ НА ЗОЛОТУЮ МОНЕТУ БЕЗ ОГРАНИЧЕНИЯ СУММЫ (1 РУБЛЬ = 1/15 ИМПЕРИАЛА, СОДЕРЖИТ 17,424 ДОЛЕЙ ЧИСТОГО ЗОЛОТА)' translating to 'The State Bank exchanges credit notes for gold coins without limit of amount (1 ruble = 1/15 Imperial, contains 17.424 dols of pure gold).' Signature lines marked 'Управляющий' (Manager/Director) and 'Кассир' (Cashier). BACK SIDE: Central red panel contains legal text regarding state credit notes on gold, their circulation throughout the empire on equal terms with gold coins, and codification procedures for supported note families with payment of rights and conditions (text partially legible in visual analysis).

Printing Technique

This note was produced using intaglio engraving (steel plate engraving) combined with multi-color letterpress or chromolithographic printing, the standard technique for Imperial Russian State Credit Notes. The fine line work, ornamental scrollwork, and complex border patterns visible throughout indicate skilled engraving by the Imperial State Printing Works (Экспедиция заготовления государственных бумаг). The precise color registration across pink, green, tan, blue, and red inks, combined with the intricate security patterns and fine detail work, demonstrates the high security printing standards of the Imperial Russian banking system. The dual-color printing on front and back with varying color schemes suggests sequential multi-plate printing operations.

Varieties

This example is identified as Pick-9c(10), indicating it is part of the later standard printing variety of the 1905 3 Ruble issue. The note bears the signature of Chikhirzin (Чихирин), who served as either Manager (Управляющий) or Cashier (Кассир) of the Imperial State Bank during this period. Serial number Ц.b 246137 places this within the standard production range. The color scheme (pink, green, tan borders on cream background for obverse; green, blue, red accents on reverse) is consistent with the standard 9c variety. No overprints or special designations are evident, indicating this is a regular circulation note rather than a special issue or emergency printing.
