About This Note

This is a PMG 65 EPQ graded 10 Shillings note from the States of Jersey, issued in 1963 by Thomas de la Rue. The note is in exceptional condition with crisp, clean surfaces and no visible wear, featuring a formal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and the iconic St. Ouen's Manor on the reverse, both rendered in attractive brown and tan tones with intricate security printing throughout.

Rarity

Common. This is a regular issue from 1963 with no indication of restricted print runs or early withdrawal. Extensive eBay transaction history shows consistent availability across condition grades ranging from F to UNC, with PMG 65 examples regularly selling in the $45–$68 range (2018 data) and more recent sales around $40–$70, indicating healthy market supply. The note is widely collected and not difficult to obtain.

Historical Context

Issued during the early 1960s by the Treasury of the States of Jersey, this note represents the post-war standardization of Channel Islands currency. The inclusion of Queen Elizabeth II's portrait reflects Jersey's status as a Crown Dependency, while St. Ouen's Manor—depicted on the reverse—is a significant historical landmark representing the island's architectural heritage and cultural identity during this period of economic modernization.

Design

The obverse features a formal right-facing profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing formal regalia with a bow at the neck, positioned prominently on the right side of the note. The center features a heraldic coat of arms shield. Denomination markers of '10/-' appear in circular designs in the upper corners. The reverse depicts St. Ouen's Manor, a significant multi-story stone manor house with multiple buildings, chimneys, and period architecture, surrounded by decorative trees and foliage, with a cross visible in the background. Both sides feature ornamental corner designs with leaf motifs and extensive guilloche security patterns throughout. The color scheme is predominantly brown and tan on cream/off-white paper.

Inscriptions

Front side: 'THE STATES OF JERSEY' / 'JERSEY, C.I.' (Jersey, Channel Islands) / 'PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER' / 'TEN SHILLINGS' / 'ON DEMAND' / Serial number: 'B612402' / Denomination: '10/-' (Ten Shillings). Back side: Denomination '10/-' (Ten Shillings) / 'STATES OF JERSEY' / 'TEN SHILLINGS' / 'ST. QUEN'S MANOR' / 'HOUSE OF LA RUE & COMPANY, LIMITED' (printer attribution).

Printing Technique

Intaglio engraving, characteristic of Thomas de la Rue's security printing standards. The note exhibits fine line patterns, detailed guilloche backgrounds, and expertly engraved architectural and portrait details. Security features include the distinctive watermark of a Jersey cow's head, fine security patterns throughout, and decorative border designs typical of TDLR's premium banknote production.
