About This Note

This is an AU-graded 1000 Đồng banknote from South Vietnam (1971, Pick-29), presented in exceptional uncirculated condition with vibrant pastel coloring and sharp printing throughout. The note features elaborate ornamental design work including prominent dragon motifs, a classical neoclassical building with ivy on the front, and a striking circular medallion centerpiece on the reverse—all rendered in delicate pink, pale blue, light green, and cream tones. The pristine state and intricate intaglio work make this an attractive example of South Vietnamese currency design from the final years before reunification.

Rarity

Common. The 1000 Đồng denomination from the 1971 South Vietnamese series (Pick-29) was part of regular circulation currency issued in substantial quantities during the final years of the Republic of Vietnam. No historical evidence suggests limited print runs, special recalls, or short-lived issue periods that would elevate rarity. Even in AU condition, this note represents a relatively accessible example of South Vietnamese currency from the early 1970s.

Historical Context

Issued by the National Bank of Vietnam during South Vietnam's final years (1971), this note represents the independent Republic's monetary system before the 1975 reunification. The ornamental dragon symbolism reflects traditional Vietnamese cultural aesthetics, while the neoclassical architecture depicted on the obverse suggests modernization efforts by the South Vietnamese state. The 1000 Đồng denomination was part of the post-1964 currency series, issued as inflation eroded the purchasing power of smaller denominations during the Vietnam War era.

Design

The obverse features an elaborate ornamental design centered on a classical multi-story neoclassical building with tall columns and ivy-covered walls, symbolizing institutional authority and modernization. Serpentine dragon motifs frame the composition in the upper and lower left corners, and additional dragon designs appear on the right side—these are characteristic of traditional Vietnamese heraldic imagery. The reverse is dominated by a large circular guilloche medallion with concentric rings of intricate line work, flanked symmetrically by dragon or serpent decorative elements and shell/fan-like ornamental patterns in the bottom corners. The entire design employs fine intaglio line work creating detailed background patterns and watermark areas. No portrait appears on either side; instead, the design emphasizes abstract ornamental and architectural symbolism reflecting state authority.

Printing Technique

Intaglio engraving (recess printing), evidenced by the crisp fine line work, detailed guilloche patterns, ornamental spiral designs, and the characteristic sharp impression of engraved security features throughout. The note exhibits the hallmark security features of professional bank note production including intricate background patterns, watermark integration areas, and complex ornamental designs that would be extremely difficult to counterfeit. Based on South Vietnamese currency standards of this period, this was likely produced by the National Bank of Vietnam's printing facilities, though international security printers may have been contracted for high-denomination notes.

Varieties

Serial number observed: 566929 (with prefix '02' visible on right side). South Vietnamese banknotes of this series typically exhibit various serial number prefixes and plate varieties. The specific signature combinations for 'THỐNG ĐỐC' (Governor) and 'TỔNG KIỂM-SOÁT' (Controller) positions may indicate particular issuing periods within 1971, though detailed signature identification would require comparison with complete reference catalogs. No obvious overprints, date changes, or typographical varieties are evident in the observed specimen.
