About This Note

An exceptionally well-preserved 500 Ruble note from 1920 issued by the High Command of the Armed Forces in South Russia, graded AU. The note features an ornate teal and blue-green color scheme with intricate engraving throughout, including a heraldic double-headed eagle on the obverse and an allegorical seated female figure with radiating sunburst on the reverse. The sharp print quality and complete absence of wear, creases, or tears makes this an outstanding example of this Russian Civil War-era emergency currency.

Rarity

Common. While this represents emergency currency from a losing faction during the Russian Civil War, these notes were produced in substantial quantities by the White Army command, and significant quantities survive. The Pick catalog listing (P-S434) indicates this is a documented and cataloged type rather than an extreme rarity. The AU condition grade, while desirable, does not indicate scarcity of the type itself. Most Russian Civil War notes from organized military commands like Denikin's are available to collectors at modest prices.

Historical Context

This banknote represents the fractured Russian state during the Civil War period (1918-1922), specifically issued by the White Army's Southern Command under General Denikin. The heraldic eagle and formal State Treasury imagery reflect the White Forces' attempt to maintain legitimacy as representatives of the Imperial Russian state, while the allegorical figure on the reverse symbolizes Russia or victory. The denomination and 1920 date place this note during the final phase of the Civil War, when the Whites were losing control and such notes rapidly lost value.

Design

The obverse features a formal classical composition dominated by a heraldic double-headed eagle with spread wings at the top center, holding an ornate shield, symbolizing Imperial Russian authority. The denomination '500' appears in both upper corners in Arabic numerals. The central text is contained within an elaborate rectangular frame with signature lines for the Chief of Financial Administration and Chief of Credit Department below. The reverse displays an allegorical representation of Russia as a robed female figure seated in an elevated position, surrounded by smaller attendant figures and framed by radiating sunburst lines suggesting divine blessing or national glory. Both sides employ extensive ornamental scrollwork and floral border designs. The consistent teal/blue-green color palette with gray and cream highlights creates a cohesive, authoritative appearance characteristic of official state currency.

Inscriptions

FRONT: 'Билеть Государственнаго Казначейства Главнаго Командования Вооруженными Силами На Юге России' (State Treasury Bill of the Supreme Command of the Armed Forces in the South of Russia); 'ПЯТЬ СОТЪ РУБЛЕЙ' (Five Hundred Rubles); 'Начальник Управления Финансов' (Chief of Financial Administration); 'Начальник Кредитной Части' (Chief of Credit Department); Serial number designation 'АЛ-007' and '250'. Date: '1920'. BACK: '500' and '1920' denominations; Text regarding circulation and legal status of State Treasury bills; Warning text: 'За поддальную билетова государственнаго казначейства виновные подвергаются лишению всех прав состояния и ссылке на каторжную работу' (For the falsification of state treasury bills, the guilty are subject to deprivation of all rights of status and exile to hard labor).

Printing Technique

Intaglio/engraving on paper, employing multiple passes with complex line work to create the intricate decorative borders, allegorical compositions, and security details. The sharp definition of all fine lines, consistent ink density, and crisp detail throughout indicate professional security printing typical of the Imperial Russian State Printing Works or similar high-security printer of the period. The handwritten signatures serve as additional authentication features.

Varieties

Serial number prefix 'АЛ' (AL) with sequence number '007' is visible; note shows printer control mark '250' in lower left. Signature variety would be present based on which financial administration officials signed the note, though both signature positions appear to contain manuscript signatures in this example. No notable overprints or series designations are apparent beyond the standard serial numbering system.
